The new $5 million Logan North Library at Underwood was officially opened last night by Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker.

Cr Parker said the 1500 square metre library opened to the public on August 4, and, since then, 800 new members have joined and more than 75,000 loans have been made.Logan North Library Opening Night with (L-R) Councillor Hanjal Ban, Shelly Blyton, Janet Poole, Mayor Pam Parker and Chris Orpen.

"The new library replaces the old library which had been located in rented premises at the former IKEA Centre in Springwood Road since 1996," Cr Parker said.

"With an excellent collection of resources to choose from, including expanded internet facilities, a community meeting room, drive-through stop and drop, accessibility centre, undercover parking, plasma screen with Foxtel, self-service coffee station and a community workshop area for author visits and functions, it is undoubtedly a library masterpiece.

"Council invested $5 million into the state-of-the-art library, including a $900,000 State Government subsidy, and I know the community is really excited by what we’ve created here."

"Not many towns can boast libraries of this kind. Our libraries are some of the best in the state, thanks to the fantastic librarians on staff. We regularly host guest speakers and information sessions on a range of topics, with the most recent being a visit by author, Markus Zusak, who was incredibly popular," Cr Ban said.

"One other thing that’s great about Logan North Library in particular is the display of artwork by Zimbabwean-born local artist Tendai Chitsike. His exquisite series of sculptures have been created using recycled metal and are on display throughout the library. I’d encourage everyone who visits the library to check them out next time."
