NoveList - the fiction reader’s advisory database

28 October 2008

NoveList is a database that is designed to help you connect with great books. It allows you to enter a favourite title, or an author, series, or subject, and find an extensive listing of suggested titles that you might also enjoy. If you have a favourite genre, use NoveList to browse lists of books in that category to find authors and titles you might have missed. You can create a personal My NoveList account to save your searches and lists, and to create alerts that will notify you by email when new books by favourite authors or categories are added to the database.

Don’t forget to use the Logan library catalogue to check availability of a title of interest!

Besides helping to locate books to read, NoveList also allows you to learn more about books and authors through Feature Articles, Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks and Reviews. It contains materials for all ages including picture books, children’s chapter books, young adult titles and books for adult readers.

Tracing your family history?

6 October 2008

Ancestry Library Edition

Trace your family history using Logan Libraries’ latest free web site - Ancestry Library Edition. This is a special version of the well known Ancestry.com subscription web site made available free on computers in Logan libraries.

It’s simple to use – just type in your ancestor’s name and any other details you know,
such as when and where they were born, when they got married . . .

You can search censuses for England, Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands from 1841 to 1901, England and Wales Civil Registration Indexes for births, deaths and marriages, plus UK and Ireland parish and probate records from the 1500s to the 1800s and even earlier. There are also a few military, immigration/emigration, court and probate records.

What is Ancestry.com?
Ancestry Library Edition is a working solution to understanding the past. It has the most comprehensive online genealogical database available in the market place spanning over 4 billion names in over 4,000 collections!

What else can I find?
Other types of records include: parish records, wills, immigration records, directories, land records, court records, newspapers, gazetteers, maps and photographs

What can I do with my results?
To print your results click on Print and follow the on-screen instructions for the best results. Always use the Print Preview option first because there is often a blank page before and after your image. There is the option to email your results but use this with caution as you can only ever email 5 results to any one email address.

Where else can I go to find out about my family history?
In addition to Ancestry.com, the library offers other resources to get you started. Please visit Logan Libraries Genealogy for further information.
