10 March 2011
| Did you know… | |||
OverDrive has a huge collection of books online? |
|||
| And… | |||
| OverDrive is free for all library members? | |||
| If you want to access the library’s online collection, but you’re not sure about how to get started, then check out our quick guide to e-Readers. | |||
| Here are some of the features you should consider, along with price, before purchasing an e-Reader for yourself or a loved one: | |||
| Design - Some e-Readers feature touchscreen controls while others use navigation buttons along the sides and bottom of the reader. Some models have a keyboard for adding notes or for browsing titles. And there is even a difference between grey-scale e-ink screens (like the Kobo) and backlit screens (like the iPad). | |||

||
| Size - Devices range in weight from just over 200grams up to 700grams. Screens size can range from around 5 to 10 inches measured diagonally. The majority of e-Readers feature a 6″ screen which makes them a light, portable alternative to a large paper novel. | |||

| Wireless Capability - 3G and WiFi connectivity make downloading books and periodicals a quick and easy process. Using a Sim Card and and a phone/data plan (like your mobile phone), models with 3G technology allow you to download content directly to the device wherever a 3G network exists. Those with WiFi give wireless access to a home network or WiFi hotspots. Others, like the Kobo or Sony models, require you to connect the device to a computer to transfer content to the device via a USB cable. | ||

| While free WiFi is currently available at Logan Central, Logan North, Logan West and Marsden libraries, computer transfers (using Overdrive) can only be accessed from home. | ||
| Software – Some devices require additional software before downloading an ebook/audiobook. For example: .aac files require iTunes; .epub and .pdf may require Adobe Digital Editions etc. |
| Content – Knowing what content is available for your brand of e-Reader is very important. If you would like to listen to an audio book, then you will require a device that can download formats such as .MP3, .AAC, .WMA. If you are wanting to read an e-book, ensure your device can download as many of the following formats as possible: .TXT, .HTML, .PDF, .ePUB, .Mobi.
